This is a brief tour as to how we manufacturer our mouthpieces on a in house CNC machine. As you will notice the process is very slow, labor intensive and can be hazardous if one is not careful.
CNC MACHINING
vs TRADITIONAL
CASTING TECHNIQUESUtilizing our in-house high tech Computer Numerical Control machines (CNC) and computer-aided design programs, Sugal Mouthpieces for more than two and half decades has been producing customized saxophone mouthpieces for discriminating saxophonist
The Sugal mouthpiece is designed to perform on both the older model of saxophones as well as on the newer and modern high-tech produced instruments.
Prior to the introduction of high-tech CNC machines in 1988, mouthpieces were produced by a number of different casting techniques, including the lost wax casting method.
Lost wax casting of mouthpieces produces “metal” that we consider to be “compromised” or “polluted” with other metals.
This happens as a result of a break down of the original composition during the melting and casting of the base material and could eventually affect not only the sound production but may be hazardous to your health if not properly finished and plated.
We only use pure "virgin grain" brass and copper bar stock that has been drawn or "pulled" through a sieve rather than casted. Producing mouthpieces from “virgin grain” bar stock on our CNC machine allows the part to be produced consistently and retain the “integrity of the metal”. The resulting product can then meet our exact specifications and tolerances while still retaining the "integrity of the metal"
We produce all our mouthpieces from begining to end in-house. This enables us to have complete control of the product insuring long life and durability.
The only operation that we do not do in-house is the plating of the mouthpiece. However, we demand very specific amounts of gold to be "plated" on each and every mouthpiece.
All of the Sugal mouthpieces are available for Tenor, Alto, Soprano, and Baritone saxophones and are finished in a 18kt “heavy-gold” electroplated over “virgin grain brass” or a virgin grain” copper metal.
We also have all models available in a sterling silver finish. Note that the Sugal factory also produces a full line of rare Grenadilla Wood saxophone mouthpieces as well as acrylic mouthpieces.
Mr. Sugal has collaborated extensively over the years with a number of world class players who have helped to produce the ultimate saxophone mouthpiece, second to none! Saxophonists seeking their own truly “original sound” simply need to call Gary Sugal (401) 751 2501 or visit the rest of the Sugal web site at: http://www.gis.net/~schwartz.
