Designed by master artisan and mouthpiece model maker Gary Sugal, the SUPER GONZ BLACK is the darkest, most soulful, and traditional CNC sounding tenor mouthpiece in the Sugal mouthpiece library.

It has been designed around the old Florida Links and has that “link correlated” center ideal for the traditional, mainstream jazz saxophonist seeking a powerful fat classic soulful sound reminiscent of the Dexter–Trane era.

In 1992 Sugal produced a gold 18kt Heavy Gold plated Super Gonz I model for the well-known recording artist, and educator, Jerry Bergonzi and named this model after Jerry’s cat “The Gonz”. Produced in our factory on the latest high–tech CAD/CAM CNC (Computer Numerical Control ) machining center the SUPER GONZ BLACK retains all the attributes from the original Super Gonz I mouthpiece. 

Today, every SUPER GONZ BLACK is manufactured with virgin grain pure copper bar stock and is laser treated making this model perfectly suited for the traditional straight-ahead jazz musician.

The SUPER GONZ BLACK combined with many of the features from the original Super Gonz I, has a long list of attributes found in no other competitors metal mouthpiece.

It features Sugal’s precision machined parallel Mini Tracks™ which focuses the air flow, economically into the chamber, allowing the metal to breathe or expand for maximum resonation. It also features a compound radius, virgin grain pure copper body, and a bullet chamber. All these features enable air to flow evenly into a medium open sized chamber.

The artist is ensured of an unusually comfortable mouthpiece that has spontaneous articulation. An evenly dispensed air flow into the chamber allows for outstanding resonance, ease of play, and complete control of every note in all of the registers.

The “SUPER GONZ “ BLACK  is designed with a straight baffle specifically for todays’ “traditional” styled  jazz musician,  as well as  the “cool jazz” contemporary jazz stylist seeking a “warmer ” traditional “fat” Dexter-Coltrane sound.  

The “SUPER GONZ “ BLACK has a “beefier” yet comfortable feel in the mouth. It is fat like a link but different in all aspects due to the technology involved in the manufacturing process.  

The “Super Gonz” BLACK is designed to aerodynamically embrace the contour of the embouchure making the “SUPER GONZ “ BLACK  one of the most comfortable mouthpieces to play. Something you will notice right away.

Side and tip rails as well as the table and body are evenly laser treated.

The refined parallel “min-tracks” allows the pure copper metal body “to breathe” resonate a warm harmonics without ever sounding “gritty” “nasal” or “kazooish.

Tip rails and body are meticulously hand finished by Gary Sugal.

Every note is controllable in every register of the horn.

Intonation and Harmonics  are “spot on”

Sugal’s exclusive pure virgin grain copper bar stock material helps the player to attain a genuine warm sound and at the same time can be slightly bright with controllable projection.  

When it comes to articulation it is easy to control and players will notice that there is no lag.

Response throughout the full range of the horn from low Bb to altissimo is even.

Due to the design of the built on ligature and Sugal’s new cap the mouthpiece is genuinely “reed friendly” to most popular brands of reeds. Just leave the reed on the mouthpiece on a Monday and it is moist -ready to play Friday.

The new “ Black Hematite finish is plated with Sugal’s proprietary hygienically safe BLACK HEMATITE finish and will last decades.

Maintenance with a soft cotton cloth will keep your mouthpiece playable for those decades.
