The first Sugal factory for manufacturing saxophone mouthpieces was built in 1988. Located on South Street in downtown Providence it was later moved in 1991 to East Providence, RI.
Designer/Inventor Gary Sugal.
Sugal Mouthpieces has been and still is since 1988 considered the "premier leader" in the world of "high-tech" "Computer Numerical Controlled" manufacturing of saxophone mouthpieces. This is due to the fact that in order to machine parts to exact specifications Gary Sugal designed and invented a four and half axis multi -controled fixture.
A Little About Gary Sugal
As a teenager Gary Sugal played the saxophone and attended Fordam University and Julliard. He studied privately with such luminaries in New York as Leo Paul, Joe Allard (former teacher to Michael Brecket) , Bill Scheiner (former teacher to Stan Getz)
In the late 60's in order to support his family Gary Sugal decided to pursue a career within the jewelry manufacturing industry.
Sugal's love of the saxophone drew him back to music and saw him enroll into the Berklee College of Music.
While attending Berklee College of Music in Boston Sugal met and studied with Jerry Bergonzi. Jerry and Gary quickly became close friends.
Jerry Bergonzi that same year also became "instrumental" in helping Gary design the very first CNC metal mouthpiece named after Jerry's pet cat "Gonz" which later was named the "Super Gonz". The goal was to produce the world's finest tenor saxophone mouthpiece, a mouthpiece better made than any other, and capable of producing a superior sound than any other.
In 1988-1989 Jerry Bergonzi visited and assisted Sugal in designing the "perfect" facings and chambers. Working with Jerry, the Sugal engineers were able to isolate the best attributes of Jerry's favorite playing mouthpieces and incorporate those exact measurements (attributes) from "metric" into "G" code, thereby enabling the computer to duplicate precise cutting patterns every time. The "Super Gonz I" and "Super Gonz II were born.
Dave Liebman
Over the years Sugal mouthpieces earned a long and rich heritage of world class endorsers. On or about the the same time that Jerry was working with the Sugal engineers in 1989, Gary met DaveLiebman. Gary produced several prototypes for Dave Liebman's evaluation. The same features and attributes incorporated into the Bergonzi tenor mouthpieces were also incorporated into the Liebman soprano models.
Jerry played and endorsed the Sugal models a number of years. Dave Liebman played and endorsed the Sugal metal soprano models for more than a decade, and has inspired many young players along the way.
Musicians such as Mark Rivera, Stanley Turrentine, Kirk Whalum, David Liebman, Jerry Bergonzi, Nick Brignola, Miles Osland, Jerry Coker, Gerald Albright, and thousands of others are just a small part of a rich heritage of musician who either endorse, have endorsed and played a Sugal CNC mouthpiece.
