PAUL PEREZ BIO
I've been playin' now 41 yrs, started at 15 yrs old touring the country in a big band that recreated the sounds of the 40s big bands.
I grew up listening to n' playin Glen Miller, Stan Kenton, Basie ect. Got hooked on the sax back then n' decided it's what I wanted to do.
Did the usual, club gigs, traveled, music school in L.A. until I was passing through Bakersfield 28yrs ago, the director of jazz studies offered me a free ride scholarship to get a degree and the chance to meet n' hang with Mike Brecker.
At that time I had been playin' 14 yrs had about 25 bucks to my name n' decided it was time to become an adult ya know? Well that decision changed my life, I got a degree in psychology n' Mike Brecker talked me outta quitin' playin'!
After that things really took off, won the Berkley Jazz Fest as the outstanding musician, Tower of Power found me, featured with Smokey Robinson after that, Donna Summer plus all those other gigs like the Temptations, Coasters, Platters ect all the while doin' an occasional movie, local commercial and so on
ABOUT THE SUGAL
THE BIGGEST, FATTEST, JUICIEST MOST BAD ASS TONE
I've ever heard come out my horn.
I let 2 older students try it today too, one's a Kirk Whalum freak, I thought he was gonna pee his pants when he played it- he almost cried when he gave it back. :)
The second cat said he'd "never heard anything that huge come out of a tenor" so yeah baby, it's beyond words
The tone is what always kills me, in my mind your pieces ARE what a tenor should sound like, big, fat, robust n' juicy.
Ill say it again the Sugal KW II has THE BIGGEST, FATTEST, JUICIEST MOST BAD ASS TONE I've ever heard come out my horn.
I play this thing 3 hours a day everyday no question,
I love the resistance, perfect to push against, in fact I can't find anything wrong with it even with old reeds work great!
IF ya ask me. Seems to me that your designs move the sound of the tenor into the modern age.
I find it odd that in every aspect of our lives things have gotten better over time except for saxophone mouthpieces.
Your pieces definitely move the sound of the sax forward and make it possible to deal with todays scene which is what we all need. :)
Like I say in the video, the sax is a 19th century instrument doin' battle with 21st century electronics, no way we can win unless we get somehelp,
Thank You -Gary,
