The Sugal 18 Kt Gold KW II +s Tenor Saxophone Mouthpiece was designed by master artisan and mouthpiece model maker Gary Sugal in 1993 for saxophonist extraordinaire Kirk Whalum.

This “beefier” 18Kt Heavy Gold overlay on  pure copper bar stock is the original design with the exact same table measurements made for the great Kirk Whalum. This is regarded as the "Holy Grail" of mouthpieces.

It is ideally suited for musicians who aspire to Kirk’s contemporary sweet huge sound. If you play rock, gospel, need that extra bite, and still want to be warm, you’re going to fall in love with this model.

The qualities of the 18Kt (HGE) KW II +s (and  KW III +s) include a fat, thick, wet, soulful sound, outstanding harmonics, controlled power with lots of edge, focus projection, and ease of play. The spontaneous articulation without lag and an exceptional evenness flow into every register of the horn are some of the amazing qualities you will immediately notice upon starting to play your first note.

The 18KT  KW II +s   by Sugal Mouthpieces, for more than thirty years, has proven to be the pro’s pro choice mouthpiece to go to with innovative concepts that have withstood the test of time. The KW III +s is a up-grade to the II.  

The KW II +s (and  KW III +s) has a long list of attributes found in no other mouthpiece. Some of these attributes include parallel slightly thicker rails, refined parallel mini–tracks, and a machined raised roll-over snow-hill styled baffle.

Sugal’s famous compound radius inside the baffle along with the exclusive bullet chamber enables air to flow evenly into a medium sized chamber. All of these attributes allow for outstanding resonance, ease of play, and complete control of every note in all registers of the horn.

The KW II +s or KW III +s  mouthpieces now includes laser treated side tip rails and a laser treated body making it perfectly suited for both the professional and semi-professional musician. The III has a slight change to the baffle and is of course laser treated. 

The KW II +s  and KW III +s is plated with Sugal’s proprietary hygienically-safe 18Kt Heavy Gold Plate finish. Manufactured in Rhode Island on a in house hi-tech four axis CNC (Computer Numerical Control) machining center.

The mouthpiece is meticulously hand finished and play tested for superior quality by Gary Sugal, prior to leaving the factory.

Note that 14kt, 18kt and 24kt are only color or shades of gold and should not be confused as to an actual gold content amount.

Industry gold plating is measured in the amount of “mills”  that  adhere to the metal  via the playing process on to the mouthpiece.

The norm or “standard” for gold plated mouthpieces in the industry is at least a minimum of 25 mills of gold. While most other makers do not come close to reaching even the “standard” all our gold plated “18KT HGE “ mouthpieces are designed for long life and durability. Sugal Mouthpieces  historically has always exceeded the norm or “standard” amount of mills that are put on their mouthpieces. .
